Compact Portable Studios

Posted by: Tracey Ambrose | 09/07 2006, 07:13

Because I'm not posting any pretty pictures today, I thought I might post the results of a quick google search into creating a Compact Photo Studio.

  • Shuttertalk (great tips on setting up lighting & reflectors on the cheep for beginners who would like to start experimenting with lighting)
  • Tabletop Studio (Photographing Jewelry)

Actually Tabletop Studio have a range of great tips on their website, including this

When I started my google search, this is the kind of thing I was hopeing to see:

EZcube
It's called an EZcube. I love the idea of portable studios, no you can't fit a person in there but you can photograph a huge range of other small objects like Jewlrey, flowers, figurines etc. These guys have a few different sizes, 20x20x20 to 55x55x55, and range in price from $90-$180US. Verdict - I want one or something like one.

Lesson 1.4 & going away

Posted by: Tracey Ambrose | 09/07 2006, 05:48

This lesson was to use my camera at waist height or above the head (any height other then eye height). Because I already do this I have decided not to actively pursue this lesson due to being low on time and energy right now.

I'm also going away today until Sunday night so I want be able to update until Monday at which time I hope to have compleated the remainder of my exercises for Chapter 1.

Lesson 1.3

Posted by: Tracey Ambrose | 09/06 2006, 05:09

This project was to look at images in a square rather then a rectangle format. I thought polaroid vs standard. I really enjoyed this project. I took photos of things that I would not normaly shoot and was very surprised by many of my results.

I decided that I had about 14 photos that I wanted to display and discuss (some in their square and original formats) but then realsied that it was probably a bad idea to load all of these images into 1 post. Instead I have uploaded them to my flickr account and shall use links form there.

This is just one of the imags cropped into a square and displayed as a polaroid (because it was fun to do).

Lesson 1.1

Posted by: Tracey Ambrose | 09/05 2006, 08:23

This chapter concentrates on developing skills of observation.

For my first assignment I had to select 5 letters of the alphabet and photograph objects or parts of them that look like those letters (keeping colour, texture, lighting and/or tone in mind).

Langford's Starting Photography

Posted by: Tracey Ambrose | 09/05 2006, 07:24

I have recently purchased a copy of "Langford's Starting Photography". I have been searching the net to find a community of users who currently use this work book, unfortunatly I have found zip. So I have decided that I shall post my attempts at the exercises in the book here.

Feedback is appreciated if, when and where appropriate.

My 'course work' will take precedence over other entries.

Market Day Sunflower

Would I have noticed this sunflower sticking out of the window shutter on a winter day or is it just because its spring?

Kaikoura

Posted by: Tracey Ambrose | 09/03 2006, 00:11

I took this photo on an overcast day on our trip to New Zealand in Jan/Feb 2006. We stopped over in Kaikoura for a few nights before heading over to the North Island. After taking this shot (and a few others) we indulged in a meal of whitebate pancakes and scalops freshly cooked by the sea from which they came just that morning, yum.
